Didn't Framemaker 5 or 7 have a book and a butterfly for it's splashscreen I can't remember. I still have the programs somewhere but as I don't have a 32bit computer, the program has been relogated to history for me. So then, what I hear you saying is that the fundamental elements of code covering basic functions of all brushes (.abr) are there as long as you don't use advanced features present in the newer programs. Okay I got that. I haven't kept up with the feature advancements in the newer versions pertaining to the brushes and these "Erodible and Brush Groups" you speak of are unfamiliar. Okay now we're cooking, I didn't know that. What I was doing was selecting the image and surrounding it with marching ants and then defining the brush. The result was random brush sizes. Thanks. Man, that doesn't sound very accurate to me. Anyway, Let me explain, I'm using Illustrator CS6 and Photoshop CS5 together. I'm coverting old vector shapes in illustrator that are badly segmented back into compound paths and transfering those vectors into PS to create vector masks where I can smooth and blur the mask in define mask properties then creating the brush. A long and tedious process to be sure but I can't figure any other way around it. Some vectors I'm creating into shape libraries. I've tried the size part of your suggestion in both programs and also I've made both documents 72dpi but no matter what I do even using snap to guides the brush size definition (see image)  jumps around when creating it. In other words I can't define a size of 1000 or 2500 px it just sets it on it's own when it opens up. Is it the same in the latest version of Photoshop? I know I can increase the size of the brush after it's made so that beg the question why have the size defined in the creation of the brush at all then? it seems to not make sense or am I looking at it all wrong?  ... It pains me deeply to even contemplate this much less mention it but when it comes to image trace—Inkscape beats the pants off of Illustrator and leaves it eating it's dust. For instance, it cleans the image up with amazing accuracy removing ninety percent artifacts, it simplifies large areas of same color segments into layers in stacking order and it does all this with one tenth the adjustment controls. I'm positively certain that it comes from the algorithm they use in their trace code. Come on Adobe, you've created the best software this side of the universe but bringing out a new feature revolutionary though it may be doesn't mean ignoring the old features we artists use day in and day out. You have to go back and re-read the mega lines of code and tweak and implement new ideas that streamline and update those tools. You just have too! ... View more

Thanks Monika, I remember downloading these scripts but after a period of not using any of them I'd forgotten what, when or how to use them so this page is exactly what I was missing. I've now bookmarked it for future reference. I particularly like "merge overlapped anchors script". It comes in handy when using the simplify path function in Illustrator. So frustrating when you go to move or adjust an anchor only to find it laying on top of three hidden ones underneath. Slows things down—a lot. ... View more

Ton, that's a cool effect. Everything works just like you explained. My question is: Up to the instructions of clearing the handles leaving only the anchor points is there a way to make the anchors show up individually IOW's, just making the anchor points predominant? That would be a great way to make fast halftoning scatter brushes. Thanks for the quick tutorial you gave, I'm putting that one into my bag of tricks.
